This playlist will leave you feeling grateful
**Here at M.T. Deco, we want you to not only thrive in business and life, but we want to help you find the tools that work for you to do that. Welcome to our fourth monthly playlist, curated by M.T. Deco friend & fan, Lissie Jacobson, a one-woman music library. Let this be the soundtrack for your work days, while you’re out for a walk, or going for a drive. Below, Lissie shares her full list and the inspiration behind her choices, and the lyrics that totally spoke to her. **
I read an article a while back stating that “You’re welcome” just isn’t a common phrase in response to “Thank you” anymore. While there are a lot of phrases to replace it, what stuck out to me is that “Thank you” doesn’t have the same plethora of synonyms. If you look them up, you get the same thing, just in a different language. It’s the delivery and way you say those two words that are the most expressive. 2 years ago this week, I made a life-altering move. While the physical move was across the street what I was leaving behind and what I was facing felt like 2 different worlds. The friends that helped that day drove so many miles to be there and instantly kicked into gear helping my new space feel like “home.” I remember feeling like I couldn’t possibly thank them enough, like there had to be something more I could say, something better, stronger. By definition, being thankful is to be pleased and relieved but feeling gratitude - being grateful, involves others. It should come as no surprise that I feel very strongly about music as a language, and this month’s theme personifies that so well. If the weight of a simple phrase is in it’s delivery, I think saying it with a song is a perfect way to express gratitude.
Sweet Pea, by Amos Lee
“But you're the only reason I keep on coming home”
The idea of home can vary from person to person- but I love the reality here that it’s not always perfect, but it’s home.
Ain’t No Man, by The Avett Brothers
“There ain't no man, a man that can change the shape my soul is in”
I find it so important to stay true to yourself and how you treat others, no matter the circumstances.
Put Your Records On, by Corrine Bailey Rae
“When you gonna realize that you don't even have to try any longer?/Do what you want to”
I think a lot of us have realized as we’ve gotten older that other people's opinions don’t matter as much. Just do what you need to do to be happy. :)
Brother, by NEEDTOBREATHE feat. Gavin DeGraw
“Brother let me be your shelter/I'll never leave you all alone”
Giving and receiving support from friends and family fills me with so much joy. I love the feeling of brotherhood here.
Come to Me, by The Goo Goo Dolls
“I'll take you back where you belong/And this will be our favorite song”
I love this song. Fighting forward and just hoping to be accepted as you are can be scary, but the comfort of this song is palpable.
Thank You for Being a Friend, by Andrew Gold
“I'm not ashamed to say/I hope it always will stay this way”
I cherish my friendships so deeply, and while this is obviously a familiar tune-the lyrics are really moving.
Friday, I’m in Love, by The Cure
“Thursday, never looking back/It's Friday, I'm in love”
I know Sunday got some love in the first playlist--but who doesn’t love FRIDAY? TGIF
Stuck with You, by Huey Lewis & the News
“Yes, it's true/I'm so happy to be stuck with you”
This is a nostalgic one- singing this back and forth with my Mom in the car when it came on the radio. Love you, Mom!
Precious Love, by James Morrison
“I say thank you, for pulling me through”
I like that he’s admitting the feeling that maybe the grass was greener elsewhere, but he was wrong.
Set Fire to the Rain, by Adele
“I set fire to the rain/And I threw us into the flames”
Who doesn’t love Adele?? The visual of turning something wet and sad and lighting it up is inspiring!
On Top of The World, by Imagine Dragons
“I've been waiting to smile, 'ey/Been holding it in for a while, 'ey”
It’s such a wonderful feeling to be able to express gratitude and happiness, especially if you’ve come out of a rough patch.
Thank You, by Nathaniel Rateliff
“I just want to thank you sweet baby for getting me through”
I definitely stuck with the “thank you” theme--but this one is so simple, yet upbeat.
Luckiest Man, by The Wood Brothers
“What you don't know is you are the luckiest man”
The goal of the month is to take time and recognize what we have and see the great in it, not taking it for granted.
Some Nights, by Fun.
“What do I stand for? What do I stand for?/Most nights, I don't know”
We don’t always know the purpose of why we do things, but we press on and believe that clarity will come.
See the World, by Brett Dennen
“Now the journey took you far from home/And pushed you out of your comfort zone”
I didn’t know the beauty of my hometown until after I left it- being out of your comfort one is such a scary but fulfilling place to be.
Hell No, by Ingrid Michaelson
“Hell no, Baby watch me up and go”
A friendly reminder to be picky when choosing who you keep in your life- make sure they’re pushing you forward, not holding you back.
(Sittin’ on) the Dock of the Bay, by Otis Redding
“I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay/Wastin' time”
Please take the time to appreciate the feeling of doing nothing. Just nothing.
The Luckiest, by Ben Folds
“Now I know all the wrong turns, the stumbles and falls/ Brought me here”
Does anyone else have deep Ben Fold nostalgia? This song gives me all the feels.
Can’t Stop the Feeling, by Justin Timberlake
“'Cause I got that sunshine in my pocket/Got that good soul in my feet”
We must not forget that feeling grateful can increase happiness! I’m always for these feet I can dance with.
Home, by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
“Home is wherever I'm with you”
This is such a fun song! Being goofy and happy with whoever you call your home is always good. :)
Lease on Life, by Andy Grammar
“You're the side where the grass is green/Yeah, you shake me like a tambourine/No jerseys, but we make quite a team”
Looking at life through a new lens can be so rewarding- especially when you have a support team.
Better Together, by Jack Johnson
“It's not always easy and sometimes life can be deceiving”
I always appreciate honesty when it comes to relationships, he does a great job of that here.
How Sweet It Is, by James Taylor
“But you brighten up for me all of my days/With a love so sweet in so many ways”
This is the epitome of saying thank you with a song- so sweet.
Soak Up The Sun, by Sheryl Crow
“Don't have no master suite/But I'm still the king of me”
A reminder that what we have lies within us and the people we share it with- that’s truly what we should be grateful for.
