Why we’re putting intention at the forefront this month

A couple weeks ago I sighed and pushed “unfollow” on an Instagram account. I found out the owner of the account was donating to a cause I didn’t agree with. I told a friend about it, and that sparked a discussion around cancel culture. I didn’t unfollow this account, I argued, because I don’t believe in the founder’s rights to exercise her own views. I know a lot of people – my family included – who have different views than I do and support different causes. I was making the intentional choice to not play a part in her monetization of my follow. I know that sponsors pay based on the number of followers an account has, and the engagement of those followers. By being a follower, by clicking on the account posts or liking a photo, I was directly contributing to her money that she was then giving to a cause I don’t support. It’s a little thing, to just click unfollow, but it fit into a broader goal of mine to be more intentional with my time, my dollars, and ultimately, my life.

I know the type of person I want to be; someone who does her part to leave the world better than it was before me. I want to be someone who recycles and composts and buys local and supports other moms and raises kids who aren’t jerks. Do I always succeed? Of course not. I cringe every time I see the amount of plastic I create from my breastmilk storage. And my kids, well, they’re too little to be ruled out – or in – as jerks. But I’m trying. With little steps every day.

Similarly, I want my career to support that vision of myself. I want to do work that helps others in some way. Writing for a non-profit. Educating students. Creating inspiring content that could help the next entrepreneur find their way.

That’s what we’re about to embark on here at M.T. Deco. We hope to fill you with inspiration, practical tips and tricks to creating a business, a community, and a life that is rich with intention and purpose.
