A playlist for when you need to hear “you’ve got this”
**Welcome to our ninth monthly playlist, curated by M.T. Deco’s in-house DJ, Lissie Jacobson, a one-woman music library.**
Decisions, decisions. Making them for ourselves is hard enough, but when you throw in the lives and future of others, it can get overwhelming and almost debilitating - so what do we do? We trust. We muster up all our wisdom, and courage to trust (and hope!) that whatever decisions we’re making, will work out. That the bumps and bruises, twists and turns will get you to the path for a happy/balanced life. If you’re constantly second guessing yourself, you’re losing precious time enjoying the moments you’re in and a smidgen of the peace of mind you deserve. I was reminded not too long ago that instead of making a back-up plan, or having a 2nd option, what you really need is just to trust that whatever situation you get yourself in, you’ll have the strength to get out of it, if you need to.
What I like about this playlist is that it encompasses pieces of what I think even the moderate music lover out there would want to hear. Some nostalgic 90’s hits, a little pop queen with P!nk and rocking out with The Killers. A mix of some ballad driven voices and some deeply thoughtful lyrics. If you come away wondering ‘who is Faouzia?!’ or ‘Bleachers sound familiar, but I can’t place them’ – you’re not alone, so go dig deeper and explore some new music.
As always, enjoy the ride and I hope this helps keep your head up as you march down the path of your decisions, trusting yourself along the way. 🎶
Minefields, John Legend & Faouzia
Ooh-ooh, these minefields keeping me from you/Whoa, what I risk to be close to you
These 2 amazing voices together gives me chills, the idea of going down a dangerous path to get to a happy one is more common than we think.
Daydream Believer, The Monkees
Oh what can it mean?/To a daydream believer
This is such a fun song! I like the idea of reversing it as a question to yourself- do you believe in your own daydreams?
I Knew You Were Trouble, Taylor Swift
I knew you were trouble when you walked in/So shame on me now
If T-swift tells you to trust your gut, you should. Anyone remember who this one was about? I’ve lost track :)
Wow and Flutter, April Smith and The Great Picture Show
And I’m not hiding the fact that I’m out for blood,/Baby, I’m vicious
I love the confidence here, being direct and making moves. April Smith made a magical album that was released in 2010 and hasn’t done anything since, but I’m hoping that changes!
Have a Little Faith in Me, John Haitt
You see time, time is our friend/'Cause for us there is no end
It’s always nice to have someone to lean on, but I feel like this is also directed at ourselves. We should always be our own advocates.
When We Were Young, The Killers
I know we can make it if we take it slow/Let's take it easy/Easy now, watch it go
The blind faith we had as kids can be so scary but also freeing, I like the idea of taking a step back and looking at how powerful that was.
Anywhere With You, Mat Kearny
I sway in the sunset/It feels like a thousand breathes a thousand steps
Mat Kearny has released so much good music over the years, this one feels right to add here, you can sense the calm and faith in his voice.
trust, Christina Perri
To trust myself/To trust someone else/To trust the doubt in the back of my mind
The balance of trusting yourself, others and knowing what feels good or bad in your gut is what this focus is all about- very strong connection to these lyrics.
Life in The City, The Lumineers
Living life in the city/Oh oh, it will never be pretty, oh, oh
Moving to NYC has always felt like such a risk and a rush. There’s a reason people love it and stay, and why some people choose only to visit.
All This and Heaven too, Florence and the Machine
'Cause I've been scrawling it forever/But it never makes sense to me at all
I love the intro and build up of this one, it ebbs and flows so nicely and also speaks so deeply of the struggle to understand what’s happening around you.
Careful, Guster
I'm ringing all the warning bells/Careful or you'll hurt yourself
There is always going to be an inner voice or voice of reason making sure you think and look before you leap.
Hold On, Wilson Phillips
Don't you know? Don't you know, things can change/Things'll go your way/If you Hold On for one more day
Classic 90’s inspiration song- we’ve all belted this out at some point- sing it loud!
WONDER, morgxn & Sara Bareilles
Somedays, I'm like a falling feather/Floating, I don't know where to land
All the self-doubt and questions you have when making decisions are encompassed iin this song. You’re not alone.
Intuition, Jewel
Your Intuition/Is easy to find/Just follow your heart baby
I remember this song being such a departure for her when it came out, but parts of the poetic nature of her writing still comes through with this one, just “pop”ier.
Don’t Think Twice, It’s All right, Peter, Paul and Mary
It ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe/It don't matter, anyhow
Love the worry-free nature of this song, reminding you to just roll with it and not to worry as much.
Trust in You, Lauren Daigle
You are my strength and comfort/You are my steady hand
Her voice is so magical, and no matter where you fall on the religious spectrum, I think you can turn this into a motivation to trust yourself.
Bad Moon Rising, Creedence Clearwater Revival
I see the bad moon a-rising/I see trouble on the way
This one is all about the gut feeling, how you can sense something bad deep down and the push to either avoid or prepare.
Who Says, Selena Gomez
You've got every right/To a beautiful life
Any advocate of a body positive/happy life is good in my book. Question all the negative and fight through.
Matter of Trust, Billy Joel
Now I know you're an emotional girl/It took a lot for you to not lose your faith in this world
Recognition here that some things just don’t pan out and it’s hard to not to get defeated. I love how it recognizes there’ll never be tangible proof of certain things, but you have to trust.
That Teenage Feeling, Neko Case
I don't care if forever never comes/'Cause I'm holding out for that teenage feeling
Not wavering or settling for less than you deserve does not come easily or without some sacrifice, but having it pan out after you stuck to your guns is worth it.
Walk Me Home, P!nk
Tryna stand up on my own two feet/This conversation ain't comin' easily
Admitting when you could use a helping hand can be really hard, but if you do have someone you can rely on, it’s a gift.
Get On Your Feet, Gloria Estefan
Deep in your heart is the answer/Find it, I know it will pull you through
One of the reasons I still listen to the radio are oldie but goodie gems like this one, that pop up at the perfect time and motivate you and make you dance in your chair.
Don’t Take the Money, Bleachers
You steal the air out of my lungs, you make me feel it
This one feels like it could be taken so many different ways, but maybe it’s saying no to something more lucrative to do what you love and enjoy. You decide.
